Modern Dance
Modern dance is a type of dance that has been developed in the early 20th century. It is well
known for its unique dance style. It does not concentrate on the structured steps like traditional ballet
dancing, instead it concentrate more on the dancer’s interpretations. Modern dancers usually bare their feet
and revealing costumes while they are dancing. This is something special about them which are different from
other dancers. <??>
The characteristics of modern dance are that it encourage and recommend modern dance dancers to
design their own dance steps and routines through their moods, feelings and emotions. It is a common matter
for them to come up with new steps for their routines, rather than following blindly on the already-exist
dance steps (a structured code of technique, such as ballet). The other characteristic about it, which is
different from ballet, is that it uses the gravity. The differences between the two dances are that ballet
dancers tend to be airy and light on their feet, whereas modern dance dancers generally use body weight to
enhance their own movement.
The modern dancers today tend to express themselves, their emotions through dancing. It is
because majority of them believe that this is one of the ways to get closer to their inner selves. Before
each of their performance, they will pick the dance steps with reference to their emotions, choose the music
that relate and suit their story that they wished to express and also, a costume that could reflect and match
their chosen emotions of modern dance.
